SENECA 2: HOLDING GOVERNMENT ACCOUNTABLE TO THE PEOPLE

Seneca 2 came to life in 2006 as a small group of mostly professional West Virginia women who shared strong feelings that things are not as they ought to be in the world today.

This group of friends decided to dedicate themselves to informing the public on critical current issues, with the purpose of helping eradicate injustice, poverty, and powerlessness.

Seneca 2 women explore issues such as war and peace, economic disparity, tax policy, environmental justice, corporate responsibility, individual freedoms, and relevant legislation affecting local people and communities. The initial Seneca 2 event was a forum on the erosion of civil liberties, held in September 2006 and co-sponsored by the Political Science Department of West Virginia State University (WVSU).

Events are held several times a year in the Charleston, WV area.

Seneca 2 takes its name and inspiration from The Seneca Falls Declaration. This document emerged from the first women’s conference in America, held in Seneca Falls, New York in July 1848. Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott, two Quakers, organized the convention of 240 men and women to call on the government for reform of laws that kept women in an inferior status. The convention delegates and their successors showed tremendous commitment and courage. Their Declaration served for the next seventy years as a model for the women’s suffrage and slavery abolition movements.

Inspired by the spirit of Seneca Falls, Seneca 2 will take action to improve government accountability in general, and to educate and empower West Virginians on issues and opportunities for change that are critical to their well-being.
